**For a forgiving first build, use Bulbasaur's Grass recovery plan. Choose Charmander for a focused Fire plan, or Squirtle for armor and shield while preparing Hydro Spiral.** The strongest choice is the one whose moves, passive and upgrade offers support the same job.

These are our editorial build recommendations for ordinary solo progression at comparable Lab investment. Use the [79-partner tier list](https://pokebonk.co/tier-list) to choose another partner; use this page to turn a choice into a run plan.

## Which build should you start with?

| Build | Starting move | Moves to keep for fusion | Signature result | Main trade-off |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Bulbasaur: Grass recovery | Vine Whip | Razor Leaf + Solar Beam | Flower Beam | Recovery helps between hits; it does not make large hits safe. |
| Charmander: Fire pressure | Ember | Fire Spin + Flamethrower | Fiery Whirlwind | Focused Fire damage needs space and defensive support. |
| Squirtle: defensive Water | Water Gun | Rapid Spin + Hydro Pump | Hydro Spiral | The fusion needs a later Hydro Pump offer, so keep an early damage plan. |

A fresh League has **three move slots**. Each listed plan can hold its opening attack and both fusion inputs in those three slots. The Lab's **4th move** upgrade costs **1,275 Stardust** and adds flexibility; it is not required merely to hold a two-move recipe. [Compare the starters](https://pokebonk.co/guides/best-starter) or [budget the upgrade](https://pokebonk.co/tools/lab-planner).

## Bulbasaur build: recovery and Flower Beam

Synthesis adds regeneration and improves healing; Grass hits can also recover HP. Build around maintaining useful Grass hits while moving through safe space.

1. Start with **Vine Whip** and move so enemies stay within its effective attack area without surrounding you.
2. Keep **Razor Leaf** when offered. Its kit eligibility begins at player level 2; an eligible move is not a guaranteed offer.
3. Reserve a slot for **Solar Beam**, eligible from player level 7. With only three slots, taking Sleep Powder first can delay the pair.
4. Upgrade Razor Leaf and Solar Beam toward **move level 8**, then use Bill's Machine for **Flower Beam**.
5. Use the freed slot to solve the problem your run actually has: nearby pressure, distant targets or control.

Our upgrade preference is reliable attack coverage first, then bonuses that affect those equipped attacks, with movement or protection when incoming hits are the limiting factor. Healing works best when it has time to recover damage; it is not a reason to stand in a Boss telegraph.

**Pivot when Solar Beam is missing:** keep improving attacks that are already helping. Spend Refresh to pursue the pair when the alternative offers do little, rather than repeatedly weakening the current run for a fusion that is not ready.

## Charmander build: Fire Spin into Fiery Whirlwind

Sea of Flames supports Fire damage. Its extra low-HP damage is conditional; preserving the run is more useful than deliberately staying near defeat.

1. Use **Ember** as the opening attack.
2. Look for **Fire Spin** from player level 2 and **Flamethrower** from player level 4.
3. Keep both fusion inputs. Fire Blast becomes eligible later, but filling the third slot with it before you have the pair can make the plan harder to assemble.
4. Bring Fire Spin and Flamethrower to **move level 8** and fuse **Fiery Whirlwind**.
5. Choose later upgrades for their actual affected moves. A strong-sounding card that affects none of your attacks does not advance this build.

Attack speed, relevant area and Fire damage can support the plan, but they are not automatic picks over every other card. If you are repeatedly hit while repositioning, a defensive or movement choice can be the better next upgrade.

**Pivot when the pair does not arrive:** use a coherent Fire kit that clears safely. A completed signature fusion is a goal, not a condition for finishing a run.

## Squirtle build: defense and Hydro Spiral

Torrent Shell adds **15 armor and 20 shield capacity** in the reviewed starter definition. Use that margin to learn attack spacing while still avoiding hits.

1. Start with **Water Gun**.
2. Keep room for **Rapid Spin**, eligible from player level 4, and **Hydro Pump**, eligible from player level 7.
3. Bubble is an earlier Water option. With only three slots, decide whether immediate help from Bubble is worth postponing one of the planned inputs.
4. Upgrade Rapid Spin and Hydro Pump to **move level 8**, then make **Hydro Spiral**.
5. After the fusion frees a slot, add an attack or control option that covers a weakness of the current run.

**Alternative: a Water–Electric reaction plan.** Wet targets hit by Electric damage can trigger Electrocution. If a compatible Electric move appears and your Water attacks are consistently applying Wet, that gives you another coherent direction. Availability still depends on your current offer pool; do not assume every partner can draft every named attack.

## How to choose upgrade cards for a build

| What is happening now? | Our next-choice preference |
| --- | --- |
| Enemies enter from an angle your attacks miss | Add useful coverage or improve the attack that can reach them. |
| The build hits reliably but cannot keep up | Upgrade the relevant attack, damage or attack speed. |
| A fusion input is almost ready | Prefer its upgrade when the other offers do not solve a more urgent problem. |
| You lose HP while crossing the map | Improve movement, protection or recovery; keep a safe route through pickups. |
| Every offer is unhelpful | Compare Refresh, Skip and Banish rather than taking a new move just to fill a slot. |

Read the card's **Affects** list. Damage, area, projectile count and duration do not help every move in the same way. The [combat mechanics guide](https://pokebonk.co/guides/combat-mechanics) explains the distinction between attack frequency, hit damage and status reactions.

## When should you fuse?

Fuse when you have both eligible inputs at **level 8 or higher**, can reach an available machine safely, and want the result plus a freed slot. Check the exact pair in the [Fusion Finder](https://pokebonk.co/tools/fusion-finder).

The matching order is **exact signature → reaction pair → same type → MissingNo.** A signature match wins even if the inputs also fit a type rule. TM Case can raise ordinary move caps, but the checked v0.8.46 readiness function still tests level 8 for each input.

The [complete fusion guide](https://pokebonk.co/guides/move-fusions) covers all 106 results and the upgrade-inheritance rules. The [Lab guide](https://pokebonk.co/guides/lab) explains the difference between a fourth move slot and a fourth card option.

## Sources and build scope

Build choices and upgrade priorities here are editorial, not measured clear rates or DPS. Starter passives, kit offer levels and named pairs use our reviewed **v0.8.18** starter profiles, supported by the separate **v0.8.25** combat dataset. On **October 25, 2026**, we rechecked the 79 signature pairs, their English names, fusion priority and level-8 readiness in the official **v0.8.46 / mvn4tolm** client. That check does not replace a full roster playtest.
