**To beat a PokéBonk Boss, preserve space, leave attack telegraphs before impact, keep useful attacks in range and use the encounter's own vulnerability mechanics.** More damage helps, but it does not replace the solution to a shielded or protected phase.

This guide covers practical solo guardian and legendary preparation, with current source checks for **Zapdos and Articuno**. Team-specific instructions are in the [co-op guide](https://pokebonk.co/guides/co-op).

## Prepare before starting the encounter

1. **Make your existing attacks useful.** A relevant upgrade is better than an unused attack type or a card that affects none of your moves.
2. **Leave room to move.** Avoid beginning an interaction with nearby enemies already blocking your escape route.
3. **Check HP and charge.** Use available recovery safely and know whether your Ultimate is ready.
4. **Keep the build coherent.** A planned fusion can help, but delaying every useful upgrade for a missing input can leave the current kit too weak.
5. **Read the encounter prompt.** Guardian patterns, legendary arenas and special Tower encounters are not interchangeable.

The [starter build plans](https://pokebonk.co/guides/best-builds) explain useful early move choices. For mode and difficulty differences, see [Classic versus Survival](https://pokebonk.co/guides/game-modes).

## Read the attack before spending a dodge

| What you see | Our response |
| --- | --- |
| A marked landing circle or area | Leave the marked space before the impact; keep an escape lane. |
| A charge lining up | Move across its path rather than continuing directly along the line. |
| A ground-level expanding wave | Use its visible gap or a properly timed jump when the attack allows it. |
| Repeated projectiles | Move through open space; avoid running into a wall that removes your options. |
| A vulnerability or downed-state prompt | Return to effective attack range and use the opening. |

These are movement recommendations, not a universal immunity rule. Some attacks check height, arena position or another condition; jumping does not avoid every hit.

## Why does the Boss still have so much health?

The checked client can raise encounter health using a recent damage budget, and some enemy paths limit how quickly damage is applied. Certain bosses also have protection and vulnerability multipliers. A slow-moving health bar is therefore not enough to diagnose the build.

Ask whether you are hitting the boss, whether its current phase is protected, and whether the arena offers a way to expose it. Then improve the build's damage if normal attacks are connecting during a valid opening.

Standard guardian behavior can become more aggressive at lower health. Long encounters can also enter **Exhaustion**, increasing incoming damage to the boss over time. Those rules do not guarantee a fixed kill time, and specialist encounters use their own patterns.

## Zapdos: use the lightning rods

Zapdos's Storm Coast arena gives you a way to turn its own lightning into an opening.

1. **Locate an active lightning rod.** For the directed-lightning attack, the checked prompt tells you to stand near an active rod so the strike goes there instead of hitting you.
2. **Guide the targeting marker toward it.** Stay aware of the other hazards while the marker tracks your position.
3. **Use the downed window.** When its own lightning downs Zapdos, it takes more damage; reposition into useful attack range and spend the opening.
4. **Leave electrified water.** The encounter explicitly tells you to get onto a plateau or island, or jump, during Electrified Sea.
5. **Respond to Supreme Thunder.** The current arena prompt names the storm's eye or an active lightning rod as the safe solution. Do not assume any point outside a small ground circle is safe.

Rod availability and the specific attack matter. The practical objective is to use the arena's active objects rather than continuously circling at maximum distance.

## Articuno: crystals, columns and reflected beams

Articuno's Celestial Glacier encounter has separate armor and beam mechanics.

1. **Remove the ice armor.** When the encounter says Articuno has covered itself in ice, break the lake crystals to remove that protection.
2. **Watch Ice Beam's path.** The checked client traces reflections from living columns. Guide the reflected beam back toward Articuno when the geometry allows it.
3. **Attack during the self-freeze.** A successful reflected beam freezes Articuno and opens a higher-damage window.
4. **Move to the gold-bordered sectors for Sheer Cold.** The arena marks the sectors to use before freezing resolves.
5. **Avoid repeated environmental hits.** Hail, wind and the changing ice surface still require space even while you are setting up a reflection.

Breaking crystals and reflecting a beam solve different parts of the encounter. If your attacks appear weak, check the armor prompt before replacing every move.

## Why healing or crowd control is not enough

Boss wounds halve healing while active. Boss flags also shorten several control effects, and some encounters have immunity windows. A recovery or freeze build should still have a movement plan.

The damage-taken path supports attack-specific caps and floors. It does not make every Boss hit universally safe or promise that three hits are always survivable. A quick sequence of attacks, depleted shields and healing reduction can still end the run.

Our priority after a hit is to avoid the follow-up, recover space and return damage during a readable opening. The [combat mechanics guide](https://pokebonk.co/guides/combat-mechanics) explains armor, shields, status and recovery in more detail.

## What changes in co-op?

As of **v0.8.46**, the developer says bosses and elites use the classic solo-style mechanics again. The team seal barriers, Cólera, changing weaknesses and linked elites introduced in v0.8.45 were removed. The guardian still attacks the whole team, so splitting far apart is not a substitute for handling the encounter.
